The Madeira Odyssey - A bespoke island escape

A Unique 'Fly-Drive-Sail' Adventure

Madeira’s northern interior is a lush, mist-shrouded wilderness that must be seen to be believed. However, its dramatic northern cliffs offer few safe anchorages. To ensure you see the very best of the island, we suggest a bespoke Fly-Drive-Sail holiday.
-
The Hybrid Stay: Spend a few days in a luxury boutique hotel or a traditional Quinta to explore the rugged north by car, then 'jump on board' Lady Jomo to experience the island from the sea.
-
The Marina Base: Use the Swan 57 as your elegant floating home in the Funchal Marina—the perfect base for daily inland excursions and coastal sailing trips.

3 DAY SAILING ITINERARY
DAY 1: Depart Funchal , A gentle shake-down sail to find our sea legs. We drop anchor in the crystal-clear waters of the Garajau Marine Reserve. A spectacular spot for snorkeling; the water is exceptionally clear, and the statue of Cristo Rei watches over us from the cliffs above. We spend a peaceful night at anchor or return to the vibrant lights of Funchal.
DAY 2:
A spirited 15-mile reach across the deep blue to the Desertas Islands. This is true "Blue Water" territory where we often encounter whales and large pods of dolphins. We anchor for lunch in the shelter of Chão da Doca. This is a strictly regulated Nature Reserve, home to the rare Mediterranean Monk Seal.
DAY 3: A breathtaking morning leg back toward Madeira, sailing past the towering cliffs of Cabo Girão—one of the highest sea cliffs in the world. Seeing these 580-meter cliffs from the water is a humbling experience that no land tour can match. We stop for a long, lazy lunch at the foot of the cliffs.
The Highlight: We finish the journey with a celebratory glass of Madeira wine as we glide back into the harbor, watching the sun set behind the peaks of the "Garden Isle."

The Best of Both Worlds
Ultimately, Madeira is an island that demands to be seen from every angle. By combining a land-based stay with your time on Lady Jomo, you get the full story of this Atlantic jewel.
Spend a few days inland exploring the misty UNESCO Levada trails and the rugged volcanic peaks of Pico do Arieiro, staying in one of the island’s exquisite boutique Quintas or a cliff-top hotel.
Indulge in Madeira’s rising culinary scene—from Michelin-starred dining in Funchal to rustic hillside tavernas—before joining Lady Jomo. When you look up at those same emerald peaks from the water, having seen the island from both the mountain clouds and the sapphire sea, you have experienced the magic of Madeira.
Fuchal Marina

As autumn settles over Europe, Lady Jomo finds the sun in the Canary Islands. Known since antiquity as the 'Fortunate Isles,' this volcanic archipelago offers some of the most exhilarating sailing in the world. In September and October, it is perfect for those seeking quiet bays, warm sea, Atlantic breezes, and authentic island culture far from the summer rush.
For a truly seamless experience, we suggest a one-way "Island Hopper" itinerary.
-
Start: Arrecife, Lanzarote. Lanzarote is the most sophisticated gateway, with an easy international airport
-
Finish: Marina San Miguel, Tenerife (or vice-versa). Starting in the East and sailing West allows us to follow the prevailing winds, making for comfortable, "downwind" sailing legs.
