Sailing Experiences

Many of our guests are thinking about some kind of plan to “sell up and sail.”

But where do you start? Well, don't believe everything you read in the glossy sailing magazines. We offer a practical option, based on our experience of doing it as youngsters (on a 34ft ) and doing it now aboard Lady Jomo. If you're addicted to Youtube channels like SLV, these are just some of the topics you can expect to gain insight into:

  • What size and type of boat should we look for?

  • What equipment will we need?

  • What budget should we allow for?

  • How much technical knowledge do we need to stay on top of repairs and maintenance?

  • What’s the best tender for us?

  • What’s the best outboard?

Why not pass your Competent Crew as you enjoy your holiday? This is the first qualification offered by the RYA which proves you have a certain knowledge. Minimum age is 12 so it's also a great way to keep your teens off their screens!

Course content includes:

  • Setting, Reefing and handling of sails

  • Use of sheets and halyards and their associated winches

  • Handling ropes, including coiling, stowing, securing to cleats and single and double bollards

  • Ability to tie the following knots and to know their correct use: ie figure-of-eight,clove hitch, rolling hitch, bowline, reef knot etc

  • Understands and complies with rules for the wearing of safety harnesses, lifejackets and personal buoyancy aids

  • Is able to keep and efficient lookout at sea

                                                          SEA MILES

On our way around the Mediterranean every summer, we welcome individuals or couples to join us on passages offshore, minimum overnight, but many are longer, and can be combined with a holiday.

This is both an inexpensive and comfortable means of complying with RYA requirements and, more importantly, gaining the experience and confidence to take others offshore. We will help you achieve all of the following: Safety procedures, Passage planning, Weather forecasting, Provisioning, Watch keeping, Offshore navigation, Man over board drill, Sail handling and preventative maintenance and even cooking.

Below is a list of proposed passages and approx timings for 2021.  Please register your interest as passages are always very popular.
